There are various types of hipster dresses, with different styles and length. Two usual characteristics running through many of these dresses is the flow of the fabric and looseness of the fit. Fashion, even with hipsters, tends to be cyclic, so some dress may even exude a vintage look from the decades of 1970s and 1980s. This casual style somehow echoes a hipster’s usually laid-back personality.
Maxi dresses are a popular choice not just for hipsters, but for all women alike. These hipster dresses are usually ankle-length and feature the spaghetti-strap design. The triangular neckline conservatively covers the chest but shows enough cleavage, and the waistline is also loose. Usually, the patterns are colorful and vibrant, from flowers to abstract images. Some maxi dresses are available in halter style, which has straps that can be tied around the neck.
Another type of hipster dress is the tank dress, which, again, features a loose fit. The tank dress has thick, sleeveless straps with a low-scooped neckline around the chest area. Hipster dresses like these are usually knee-length or several inches shorter, which can be easily worn during the summertime. Casual tank dresses can have a striped pattern or a simple solid color, while dressier tank dresses can have monochromatic patterns and shiny fabrics.
For a more casual effect, a hipster can choose to wear flutter dresses. Hipster dresses like these usually have loose sleeves just above the elbows and an accentuated waistline, usually just below the breast area. Flutter dresses have a more flowing look because the fabric is usually crimped to resemble ruffles. The dresses’ V-neckline also adds a touch of femininity.
The hipster’s preference for loose clothing has also developed a trend called shirtdresses. These dresses include many elements of a man’s button-down polo, but are reinterpreted in a feminine way. Such details include a collar, long sleeves with cuffs, and probably a small pocket on the chest area. These hipster dresses don’t have an accentuated waist, just like the male version of the clothing. A belt can be worn around the waist to show a more a womanly silhouette.
Hipster dresses also include the jumper dress in the trend. Also called a pinafore, the jumper dress is similar to the tank dress, only it has a more squarish neckline. This type of dress is usually worn over a shirt but can also be worn without the shirt.
Many hipster dresses are not so uncommon in the mainstream trends and fashion. What makes them iconic “hipster” attire is how these dresses are worn. Wearing sneakers or boots instead of heels, putting on beaded jewelry instead of metallic ones, and having a loose hairstyle will give the dress a more hipster effect.
